I just don't get it. Why can't you believe in God and evolution at the same time? And how could anyone rationally believe that a man saved all the animals on a boat--including the dinosaurs ... big, massive dinosaurs?!

PETERSBURG, Ky (Reuters) - Like many modern museums, the newest U.S. tourist attraction includes some awesome exhibits -- roaring dinosaurs and a life-sized ship.

But only at the Creation Museum in Kentucky do the dinosaurs sail on the ship -- Noah's Ark, to be precise.

The Christian creators of the sprawling museum, unveiled on Saturday, hope to draw as many as half a million people each year to their state-of-the-art project, which depicts the Bible's first book, Genesis, as literal truth.

While the $27 million museum near Cincinnati has drawn snickers from media and condemnation from U.S. scientists, those who believe God created the heavens and the Earth in six days about 6,000 years ago say their views are finally being represented.

"What we've done here is to give people an opportunity to hear information that is not readily available ... to challenge them that really you can believe the Bible's history," said Ken Ham, president of the group Answers in Genesis that founded the museum.

Here exhibits show the Grand Canyon took just days to form during Noah's flood, dinosaurs coexisted with humans and had a place on Noah's Ark, and Cain married his sister to people the earth, among other Biblical wonders.

Scientists, secularists and moderate Christians have pledged to protest the museum's public opening on Monday. An airplane trailing a "Thou Shalt Not Lie" banner buzzed overhead during the museum's opening news conference.

Opponents argue that children who see the exhibits will be confused when they learn in school that the universe is 14 billion years old rather than 6,000.

"Teachers don't deserve a student coming into class saying 'Gee Mrs. Brown, I went to this fancy museum and it said you're teaching me a lie,"' Dr. Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education, told reporters before the museum opened.

A Gallup poll last year showed almost half of Americans believe that humans did not evolve but were created by God in their present form within the last 10,000 years.

Three of 10 Republican presidential candidates said in a recent debate that they did not believe in evolution.

Not according to your average fundie, they believe the mention of Leviathan, Behemoth and various creatures called "dragons" in the Bible are proof that giant reptiles lived in the time of men. And they believe the Biblical dragons are validated by similar legends of giant reptiles all over the world as well as modern sightings of supposed sea serpents, pterodactlyls, etc.

And if God flooded the whole world as they interpret the Bible to mean, and if there are dragons mentioned in the Bible living on after the flood, then Noah obviously brought dinos on the ark, and apparently very nasty fire breathing ones that like to devour virgin maidens, since these are the main dino/dragons the legends speak of afterwards. (I wonder how Noah managed it, did he convince a bunch of virgins to go on his cruise, only to end up dragon fodder?. How can anyone argue with this logic?

And since these dragons are supposed to wipe out a third of the world at some future date as stated in the book of Revelation, then they must still be hiding out somewhere (though ancient Christian texts state they mostly reside in "Heaven" when not on soul devouring missions of heavenly retribution. So maybe Noah did not have to book them on his ark after all.

But in truth, the Bible and evolution can be compatible if a little common sense is emplyed. The first Genesis story even puts the dino-dragons in their proper evolutionary time period, after the fish, and before the mammals, with humans coming last. That is actually one of the most remarkable and inexplicable things in the Bible, though fundies do not fathom this and think the earth was created in six literal days. Some Bibles now translate the word Tannin not to dragons but to whales, but this makes no sense, for in many places, the Tannin are described on land, and even singing praises to God, as in the book of Psalms.

But no, you are right, the actual dinos died out some 65 million years ago. The dragons in the Bible are just that - dragons. They are heavenly creatures much like angels only reptilian ones whose name, "Seraphim" means fiery flying serpents in Hebrew, and accordingly, when the Bible was translated into Greek, the ancient Rabbis translated Seraphim to Drakons, thereby proving this is the correct tranlation, and that they are not human-like in any way.

Of course, this is all lost on modern mainstream Christianity, for in their fantasies, the Biblical reptilian seraphim have been turned into nordic looking, blue eyed, blond hair humans with big swan wings sprouting out of their backs copied from pagan Roman statues, as we see in cartoons and on Christmas cards.

I can't wait to check that "museum" out, it is only about a four hour drive and ought to be hilarious.

Sound Theology acknowledges that the Genesis record is an account of God reforming and making habitable again the Earth. Early man and the fossils all reside prior to Gen 1:2.

It is absolutlely ridiculous to interpret the bible literally (or at all, in my opinion).

"Taken literally, the Bible says the earth is flat and setting on pillars and cannot move (1 Chr 16:30, Ps 93:1, Ps 96:10, 1 Sam 2:8, Job 9:6). It says that great sea monsters are set to guard the edge of the sea (Job 41, Ps 104:26)..."
