A Polish government watchdog has said it wants to investigate if the Teletubbies promote homosexuality.

Ewa Sowinska, who deals with children rights, said she would ask psychologists to advise if this was the case in the BBC children's show.

She was quoted as saying: "I noticed (Tinky Winky) has a lady's purse, but I didn't realise he's a boy.

"At first I thought the purse would be a burden for this Teletubby ... Later I learned that this may have a homosexual undertone."

Poland's conservative government has upset human rights groups and drawn criticism within the EU by apparent discrimination against homosexuals.

But parliamentary speaker Ludwig Dorn said he had warned Sowinska against making public comments "that may turn her department into a laughing stock."

The Teletubbies became a target of religious conservatives in 1999 after the late US evangelist Jerry Falwell suggested Tinky Winky could be homosexual.

Hilarious paranoia! Jerry Falwell croaked and is reborn as a Polish Conservative! I wonder that means that Falwell is a Catholic now in his new life -- that must seem like hell to his former bigotted self!

As an American who is of 100% Polish descent, just let me say that anyone who thinks that a tot who watches a goofy, amorphous alien like Tinky Winky carrying a "purse" and then grows up to be a homosexual as a result -- is an idiot.

Right! Oscar the Grouch lives in a garbage can! Millions of kids watching will grow up to be homeless dumpster divers!

Also -- I wonder how everyone feels about the ultra-violent Power Rangers or Ninja Turtles? Will this cause children to grow up to be violent freaks?

The polish gov is overtaken by religious fantic nuits. And dasly, the polish society supports them, and least a big part. Really sad.

I can only imagine what would happen if they showed on tv the kinds of cartoons I watch?

Examples

linked-image

Kannazuki no Miko

linked-image

Gift

linked-image

linked-image

Nana

linked-image

Mai Hime

And all of these are from Family shows, save Nana is is probably a Teenagers show.

Never show any anime in Poland - it'll start a civil war.

All the world needs is classic he_man cartoons and super ted and thundercats and transformers to teach the world to be a better place. The telly tubbies on the other hand are going to get kids beat up in school.

Well, that depends. A couple of years ago I had to have surgery on a very bad wisdom tooth, and the doctor gave me a truck-load of prescription narcotics. I got bombed out of my mind and watched the Tele Tubbies with about a pound of oxycodone streaming through my veins and never quite enjoyed a TV show so much in my life!

Ah yes, anime.

For whatever reason, homosexuality isn't as big a deal over there. Which, well, can cause trouble (to say the least) for American dubbing companies (Sailor Moon being the prominent example)...

What is the world coming too?

Sex just isn't considered as taboo as it is in the west.

Hmm...you sure about that? A friend of mine lived in Tokyo for a while; he said sex is a thing that really shows everyone, like people reading porno magazines in buses and vending machines that have used women's underwear, but at the same time people sort of exist it doesn't happen. Like it's really private there. And virtually every spa had a "no gays" sign, and homosexual in general weren't really appreciated, officially at least. Of course it's hard to generalize things like that, but anyway.

There was a big fuss about Tinky Winky being gay when Teletubbies first came out here in the UK, so don't think it's just the Polish who object.

I'd be more worried about their diet - custard and toast?! What about their "Five a day"!?

From what I understand traditional roles are a big thing still in Japan and they expect men and women to marry and publicly you don’t talk about sex and homosexuals. But on TV when you are out of the public eye they know a lot of girls like watching gay men together, and a lot of guys LOVE seeing two girls together… and people like sex, so TV shows it. Lesbians in anime are pretty common as side characters (whey-hay), and lots of female-oriented anime deals with gay men.

In Japan its popular to make X-rated movies of popular anime even if was originally a children’s program (for example Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z both have pornographic spin-off movies, even though the prime audience of both shows are children and young teenagers).

So basically, from what I understand outwardly Japanese are very very conservative, but privately they love TV which pushes the boundaries. So basically Japan is both less and more conservative towards gays than the west is at the same time.

That said I am not Japanese, and my knowledge of Japan is largely founded on the Japanese anime community… who may not be painting me an accurate portrait of their country.

I know an argentine nikei currently living in japan, and Talon, you are not too far away from the correct picture. In Japan they are very dependant of apparences, but what happens in your private life is only your bussiness.
