A new examination of male neanderthal remains found in what is now Iraq has revealed that he appeared to have been killed by a spear thrown by a modern human between 50,000 and 75,000 years ago.
Newly analyzed remains suggest that a modern human killed a Neanderthal man in what is now Iraq between 50,000 and 75,000 years ago. The finding is scant but tantalizing evidence for a theory that modern humans helped to kill off the Neanderthals. "

We existed at the same time? Yes, Neanderthals and humans existed at the same time. The last neanders died out something like 35,000 years ago, I think. I'm not sure how far homo sapiens go back, but I'm sure it's at least a couple a 100,000 years -- so there was a long history of overlap when both roamed our planet.

Why does it not surprise me that violence may have started in that region of the Earth.

First of all neanderthal's werent that dumb and totally could have used a spear, even primates can use weapons...soooooo yeah! The issue isn't if they could have picked up and used a spear. It's that the wound indicates it came from a light weight thrown spear rather than a heavy thrusting spear. Though I do agree that it's hard to entirely rule out the possibility of a Neanderthal perhaps tossing a human made spear.

Sorry, I did not express myself well there, it was meant as a statement, not a question. The question mark was to indicate expressed curiosity at missing this very basic fact. Hard to evolve into yourself existing beside yourself Yep, Modern Humans emerged about 200,000 years ago. About 130,000 years ago, com... [More]

Though I do agree that it's hard to entirely rule out the possibility of a Neanderthal perhaps tossing a human made spear. a neanderthal was around 5'4 and built like a line backer. i think they would have been capable of throwing a spear or a football. just because they weren't known to make them doesn't mean they couldn't have used them the way they were meant to be used. they also never made jewelry until the end of their ... Hrmzz, now there is a message that needs to be conveyed to a great many people. Depictions of Neanderthal often are accompanied by spears. Is there a study on this? Are we sure they died out? The third pic looks like a guy I know.
