With claims of an out of control wolf population Sweden allows wolf hunting again.
In an attempt to regain control of its wolf population - which many hunters are claiming threaten livestock - Sweden has reinstated wolf hunting despite European Union environmental laws.
Sweden is allowing hunters to shoot a total of 20 wolves this year. It reintroduced the wolf hunt in 2010 - the first in Sweden since 1964. But Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik says wolves in Sweden have an "unfavourable conservation status".

Cetacea, you are absolutley right when you say "The 'function of man' was never meant to be the regulator of wolves and we are not doing a good job at it because we feel threatened by them". The truth is that man and wolf, through man's desire or design, occupy a very similar niche and so historically wolves have been picked on by man, and in many areas been hunted to extinction or close to it. When I said I would be surprised if relocation hadn't been looked into I was saying that from the perspective of being from an area where we re-located sea lions to prevent them from destroying salmon r... If the population of a predator becomes too large and they kill all of thier natural prey, then they start going after things like livestock, pets, and eventually little kids playing in thier back yard. to prevent all of the above population control on the predators is a nescessary evil. 10 or 15 years ago thier was some animal rights advocates petitioning in my hood to stop the hunting of cougers using packs of dogs because they felt it was too scary for the animals. When they asked me to sign I explained that if that practice were abandoned then rather than have a group of rednecks paying th... [More]

The wolf population in Sweden is far from robust and is facing a lot of issues due to inbreeding as it is. Inbreeding can cause a lot of issues that may be reflected in for example reduced lifespan and reproductive potential. How are they selecting the animals to shoot? There is absolutely no information on it, they just seemt to be issuing permits for hunters until the quota is filled. In a social animal where all pack members take part in raising a litter, going out and shooting a random animal is hardly the way to ensure a sustainable coexistence with these animals. Are they taking any prec... [More]

Like someone in Seattle debating what Sweden's animal population should be? Sorry for the late response but that's just bulldroppings GreatFenris. Go to the political section and read how many Europeans debate internal US policies without seeing the statement that people not in the US have no business in this debate and then flip-off. And I really mean that.

And I really mean that. Well you started that particular line of argument when you claimed the EU should keep it's nose out of Sweden's business. THing is, Sweden is part of the EU, and we've agreed to follow their rules. It sucks, but so does our government. And the Minister in charge of the choice to let more wolves be shot is a ****in... Figure out ways to fence off live stock effectively. Warn and educate the public about presence of wild animals. Sterilisation programmes. Accept a few human losses because thats the reality of nature. You don't have to reach for the gun everytime something goes wrong. one day in salt lake an animal control officer walked up a driveway to catch a greyhound, however when he got close enough he found it to be a sleeping couger. what if that had been a kid, the cat wasnt hunting it was sun bathing. but the kid would have been just as dead.

Then you'd shoot it . But I don't support trying to fix the entire problem by just shooting everything.

And yeah, I understand the need to kill animals IF they are posing a serious threat to humans. To me the question of killing animals for attacking livestock is another issue though because they're just following their instinct to survive. I don't claim to have the answers but I wish they'd figure out a way to solve the problem without harming anything.

i am going to put this more to my opinion on hunting. i think if your hunting for food good, if you need to hunt for food great. if your hunting for clothing as in you need to that too is great. if your hunting to decorate your house or person or what ever, that is murder. self defense is self defense of course.
