The aircraft was scrambled when radar stations picked up an object flying at a height of 28,000ft.
Officials took the decision to scramble the jet when the unidentified object was spotted flying towards India from across the border with Pakistan. Air traffic control cleared the area of known aircraft to avoid incident during the pursuit.

"Our radars picked up a UFO near Amritsar which was coming towards India from the International Border with Pakistan," said an IAF source. The SU-30MKI took off from the Halwara air base.

Far from being a visitor from another world however the object was eventually identified as a weather balloon that had drifted close to Indian air space.

Officials are now conducting a full investigation.

Sorry ChrLzs but this one made me chuckle. Me To. But one out of twelve ain't that bad - I'd take those odds in a lottery..

In this case we have "UFO" being used in the true, albeit less entertaining sense - an object in the sky that was not immediately identified. Of course 75% of the readers will substitute ET vehicle for "UFO" and feel the evidence is mounting. Who do you think would suppose such an outrageous thing?

Who do you think would suppose such an outrageous thing? Hahaha, more than a few. Hey, I've been trying to track down Jaipur here in Chicago to no avail. I may have to order some from a distributor and have it shipped. It is not readily available out of the U.K.

Really they scrambled a Su-30MK and asked Civilian Planes move out of the way for a Balloon?

Really they scrambled a Su-30MK and asked Civilian Planes move out of the way for a Balloon? Balloons are a valid threat to national airspace, man What if you needed to launch a missile at your neighbors and it hit some kid's balloon instead? More dangerous than you think

Really they scrambled a Su-30MK and asked Civilian Planes move out of the way for a Balloon? The tensions between India and Pakistan are quite real. Anything in the air in the border region is taken seriously.

I am very much into Politics so i know full well that there are some serious tensions between India and Pakistan. However i am also very much into UFOlogy so for them to scramble a jet and then claim it is a Balloon is just Classic UFOlogy 101.

Lets not forget the fact that the Indians aren't very good at target recognition. They thought the planets Jupiter and Venus were Chinese spy drones for half a year. http://www.dailymail...spy-drones.html
