26 girls fall ill in mass hysteria incident

More than two dozen students at a girls high school in Japan suddenly became unwell at the same time.
The strange turn of events at Yanagawa High School began at around 10am on Monday when a first-year student suddenly shrieked and fell down in the middle of a lesson.

A short time later two more girls did exactly the same thing, as did several others who came to see what was happening. The peculiar malady had soon affected a total of 26 students who all ended up having to be sent home.
Reports indicated that many of the girls had turned pale before collapsing which lead to rumors on social media that they had been possessed by evil spirits. The school closed down for the rest of that day and the next, however all of the girls went on to make a full recovery.

Psychiatrist Rika Kayama believes that the students may have been struck by a case of mass hysteria and panic prompted by the contagious nature of stress and tension during adolescence. A strongly held belief in the occult may have also been a contributing factor.

"The only thing you can do (to avoid the recurrence of such incidents) is to distance yourself from people and topics that triggered such incidents," said Kayama. "Rumors spread quickly in today's society, through Twitter and other means, raising the possibility of panic attacks."

I heard this story too. I thought it was an urban legend. And haha. Not every teenage girl is crazy guys. Not even most. You are undoubtedly right about girls. It's women who are crazy because men make them so.

Was there A) a cute boy/boy band nearby an impressive sale on shoes or C) were they overstressed Japanese HS girls (the industrialized nation with the highest suicide rate and lowest sex per capita) because any of those things might explain it. Or D) A giant alien octopus with many tentacles.......

I'm a huge fan of Japanese culture and history but Japanese kids can be somewhat lemming like at times.

I remember reading of the other cases where girls in school came down with symptoms of jerking and twitching, the only thing I could think of what would all the girls have in common in a school, some chemical or bacteria in the tampons in a machine in the girls bathrooms that they used that got into their systems.

Did they check to see if there could of been an actual agent in the area causing hallucinations they really don't go into detail here accept about what they think is going on.

Weird. Something similar happened in NY a few years ago, that people thought was mass hysteria; where all these kids in a school had developed behavioral and movement "ticks". Turns out that it was some Neuro Psychiatric disease where there immune system glitched and if they were near certain germs they would act all crazy and stuff. It could be that in this case too.
