Hikers freak out over burning 'devil tree'

A video showing a tree burning from the inside out while producing very little smoke has appeared online.
The disturbing spectacle was discovered by two hikers who happened to come across it while out walking in the woods near the city of Defiance in Ohio.

One of the men took out his cellphone and started to film the fire as it slowly engulfed the inside of the tree while leaving the outer trunk and branches untouched. Even more peculiar was the almost complete lack of smoke from the blaze despite its apparent intensity.
The footage managed to generate several hundred thousand views after being posted online with Internet users dubbing it the 'devil tree' due to its peculiar nature and eerie orange glow.

While many have suggested that the fire may have been started through some sort of supernatural process, the most likely explanation is that the tree had been struck by lightning shortly beforehand.

It's a clear sign we have to get rid of God before it's too late.

I'm perfectly fine with the fact that these yahoos started the fire themselves, but just from the video there is no evidence that they did this. I'm playing devil's advocate here (I get to do that a couple times each year). All that you have posted still doesn't, with 100% confidence, that the fire was started intentionally. I like your line of thinking, though, keep it up! -The tree is next to a river - a good source of mud/clay/silt So? That doesn't necessarily mean anything actually. -The base of the tree (about 1 meter) is a different colour (perhaps grey) and smoother texture to the upper... [More]

A clean burning (VERY HOT) fire will not emit smoke. It's when the fire dies down and starts to smolder that you will start to see smoke. They probably used some kind of accelerator to get it started thus turning the wood inside the trunk into charcoal.I doubt lightning was a factor.Because that usually causes the tree to explode.Just a couple of guys out roaming in the woods smoking weed and decided to perpetrate a hoax.GOOD JOB!

Do not forget that Carpenter Ants live in dead Trees. Their activity creates lots of fine wood dust in the cavities which is kindling for a fire.

Proof aside though, my gut is telling me they were up to no good and my logical mind is not arguing.

Yeah I am going with the lightning strike answer to this one, seems the most logical explanation, that and the probability that they set it up themselves lol

No, BUT, I do enjoy a challenge. ;-) Lets consider the evidence a bit more closely. -The tree is next to a river - a good source of mud/clay/silt -The base of the tree (about 1 meter) is a different colour (perhaps grey) and smoother texture to the upper trunk. -At one point we see a small patch of the greyish lower section is lighter than the rest of it. (Clay gets lighter as it gets drier.) -At least two black unworn gloves feature in the video clip. One is clean, the other is covered in a grey substance remarkably similar in colour to the base of the tree. (Especially on the fingers) -There... [More]

Just another hoax like everything on the Internet. Not everything.

My theory: 1: It was already a dead tree. 2: When a tree dies it gets eaten from inside out by wood eating bugs. 3: The inside of a dead tree will get a saw dust like texture inside. 4: This saw dust texture can suck up massive amounts of water compared to a living tree. 5: This water column inside the tree attracts lightening strikes stronger than a living tree does. 6: When lightening strikes into such a tree the massive amount of energy released instantly dries up the tree leaving glowing sparks. 7: Glowing sparks can start this type of fire and burn the tree up in a week or so. And this is... [More]
