The bizarre project will involve a ten-week training course as part of a new UK television series.
The twelve dogs, which have been picked for the show from over 120,000 candidates, will spend much of their time being assessed by a team of behavioral specialists, vets and dog trainers.

Among the traits the experts will be analyzing will be each dog's memory, reasoning skills and communication skills to see which of them has what it takes to learn how to fly a plane.

Those that make it through this phase will be put through a special ten-week training program designed to teach them how to operate a single-engine aircraft all by themselves.

But is it really possible to teach a dog how to fly a plane or is the whole thing just wishful thinking ?
"Given that we would not expect a human three-year-old to be able to fly a plane, I would not expect that a dog could do so either," said canine psychologist Stanley Coren.

Presenter Jamie Theakston on the other hand remains a lot more optimistic.

"People give up on them too easily and this series will show us why we shouldn't," he said.

"Even if a dog has been deprived of human contact or has been badly treated, it is just as able and motivated to initiate a new relationship with a human very quickly."

The series, which is entitled "Dogs Might Fly", is due to begin in two weeks' time on Sky One.

Fly maybe, solo..., I highly doubt it.

Wow, what a stupid notion. Hey, I absolutely love dogs but they have the reasoning power of a 3 to 4 year old child. Would you teach a pre-school kid to fly?

Well, we knew it would come to this: "Reality" TV has run out of ideas.

All they need to do is have a computer to light buttons and have the dog trained to press the button that lights. That will work as long as nothing mechanical happens to the plane. At least you don't have to worry about a dog hitting the bar before he flies.

Must be really scraping the barrel for ideas on a reality TV series. Guess the brainchild of this show must been walking his dog out and while cleaned up his pet's business off the ground looked up to see a plane flying over head. . Here is my idea get the producers of these reality show, strap them into chairs and forced them to watch all the crap they made over the past 20 years and see which is the first to snap.

Update - A New Zealand dog trainer who taught RSPCA dogs to drive has done the unthinkable and managed to train dogs how to pilot a plane in a bid to prove just how capable rescue dogs can be.In a world first, Mr Vette was able to successfully train three rescue dogs, Reggie, Shadow and Alfie, to fly a plane, and even perform tricks, including a figure of eight manoeuvre. This is a real UK show. They had one before teaching dogs to drive a car. It's all just to see if they can do it. I'd rather watch it than Big Brother.

And another thing. wouldn't it be safer to teach them to drive a car first Dogs already learnt how to drive cars, but now want a bigger challenge.. Meet Porter. The World's First Driving Dog.
