As of today, Auschwitz death camp survivor Yisrael Kristal is exactly 112 years and 178 days old.
Born near Zarnow in Poland back in 1903, Kristal has now been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest man in the world after the previous record holder, Yasutaro Koide of Japan, died back in January aged 112 years and 312 days.

Having survived both world wars, the super-centenarian stated that he didn't know any secrets to living a long life but believed that everything was "determined from above".

"There have been smarter, stronger and better looking men then me who are no longer alive," he said. "All that is left for us to do is to keep on working as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost."

He needs to live another 134 days if he want to at least equal the former title bearer, Yasutaro Koide. And still 10 years to go to catch up with Jeanne Calment.

Imagine being a teenager in 1916 and still being around to see what Pluto really looks like, smart phones, hoverboards, lasers, etc. it would be interesting to ask him what he's seen that has stayed the same.

All that history has imposed on the Polish nation means that this man has lived through some amazing and terrible things. Poland regaining independence in 1918, the Miracle on the Vistula in 1920, two world wars, the Soviet takeover then independence once again. Plus surviving the Holocaust! I hope this man has told many stories to family and friends because I bet he's seen enough to fill volumes. And as a fan of Polish history I'd love to read it.
