Can the mind be uploaded in to a machine ? Image Credit: CC BY-SA 3.0 Glogger / Chris Aimone
Dmitry Itskov maintains that he will live forever by uploading his consciousness in to a robotic body.
Four years ago the Russian entrepreneur founded the 2045 Initiative, a non-profit organization with only one goal - to find a way to achieve everlasting life within the space of just three decades.
The key to accomplishing this, he believes, is to develop a way to 'upload' a human mind in to a machine - an immortal body that could maintain someone's personality and consciousness.
The organization employs a team of highly-skilled specialists who are working on, among other things, the neural interface that will make it possible to transfer the brain to a computer.
"Different scientists call it uploading or they call it mind transfer," Iskov told the BBC.
"I prefer to call it personality transfer."
While the Russian billionaire's goals are certainly impressive, the question remains as to whether, even if he is successful, anyone would actually want to live forever inside the cold body of a robot.
"It will provide something that has never existed before and which could not have existed, something which may appear fantastic and incredible today," he said. "All history will prove to be merely a process of preparing for an unprecedented leap forward in evolution."
what a way to spend eternity....deaf, ,blind, unable to talk....no way to feel anything...no way to move, no way to hold a person, or spend time with them...smell them...and just being eternally terrified of a power cut which would/could.... mean death.... , The end of porn as we know it!
this subject/man are on tv documentary tonite at 8, watch if you can http://www.radiotime...the-immortalist not in UK? try bbci player, heres the direct link http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0747199 .
I can not "sense" myself without being in my current human body. Thinking that "sense of individuality" is highly dependent on all the bizarre and wonderful chemical interactions that makes me "me" I don't know how this can be duplicated in a purely electronic machine.
In my experience, particularly with science and technology, it has never been a good idea to say "it's not going to work... ever". There have been people who adamantly claimed that AI would never be able to beat a Go player due to the game's complexity, however Google's AI DeepMind has defeated a world champion of the world's most complex game 4-1... just recently. This happened ten years before it was "supposed to". People said "It's not going to happen", "It's not going to work"... and it did. I'll have to agree with Lilly. I don't think it's going to work because I believe his philosophical... [More]
No. We're biological entities, not robots. Robots are created and programmable. Humans were not created, we evolved over millions of years. no the program to make a human has been therre from the start. matters not if you believe in god or not. we hsve nearly the same dna as a bacteria or virus.

By that logic you've just declared all lifeforms robots. If that's the route you want to go, you have fun there buddy, but you're wrong. Robots and biological lifeforms are different.
Mind Cloning, right? The question is can you switch between your duplicates or all of them becomes independent existences? The latter means you failed to achieve eternal life.
