How quickly can a vampire drink your blood ?

Physics students have calculated just how long it would take for a vampire to drain your body of blood.
It might be near to the top of the list of unlikely ways to die, but if by some peculiar twist of fate you did end up at the receiving end of Dracula's fangs, how long would you last ?

According to physics students from the University of Leicester, the answer is just 17.3 minutes.
The unorthodox research was published just in time to coincide with the 85th anniversary of the famous 1931 Universal movie 'Dracula' which starred Bela Lugosi as the titular vampire.

The students used fluid dynamics to determine how much blood would be lost through a puncture wound in the neck and then worked out from there how long it would take for the person to die.

According to their research, it would take a vampire 6.4 minutes to drain 0.75 liters - that's 15% of a person's blood - with the blood loss becoming fatal when that figure reaches around 40%.

There seems to be a belief that vampires are not real. Hmm, then, what do you think the global conglomerates are ? ? ?

Missing the point here - instead of hanging around doing all types of nothing, these people used their brains and knowledge to solve a problem - regardless if it is an imaginary one - better than just trolling websites

Aww, come on folks, enough with the pointless dismissing of vampires in general. This is actually kind of interesting. No, no research money was used to do this. It was a class project given out by the professor. Every year he assigns students to write 10 short papers for Journal of Physics Special Topics. This is a student publishing entity. It lets students be creative and get used to how to work up their projects for publishing. They themselves state right in their paper that vampires are not real. Yes, I did read their paper, it was interesting. Some way over my head math, lol. But the inf... [More]

Ingesting blood results in vomiting. Case dismissed. not if your a blood drinker like the vampire bat.

This was just an exercise to see if they were able to figure it out. It really has nothing to do with belief in real vampires since it was done to coincide with the anniversary of the fictional movie. Some years ago students tackled whether they could prove if superman could or could not fly. Doesn't mean they thought superman was real.

vamps aren't human. i would think it would be an alll night affair. having only two small fangs to punch holes in a jugular and sucking 5 pints of blood through them. Five fingers, four limbs, no tail, binocular vision, minimal hair coverage, upright gaint, and a non-divergent big toe. Ding ding ding, we have a human folks!

Well... at least this group of students is off of that really annoying zombie fixation everyone seems to have these days...

or a chimp. that has learned to walk upright. Chimps have a divergent big toe. With the exception of Desmodus rotundus (the true vampire bat), all depictions of Vampires have been of humans. You can argue it up and down but it still doesn't change the fact that vampires are anatomically human.

In movies and tv shows they sink their fangs into the victim and drops the body a couple of seconds later. Seems like Hollywood got it a bit wrong.
