NASA proposes $10bn moon base within 6 years

Is it possible to build a moon base on the cheap ? Image Credit: NASA/Dennis M. Davidson
The US space agency has suggested that it would be possible to build a 'cheap' moon base by 2022.
Hot on the heels of ESA director general Johann-Dietrich Worner's vision of a 'moon village' by 2030, scientists at NASA have been calculating how much it would actually cost to build a moon base within the next six years and the result is a lot less than you might expect.

Back in the 1960s the US spent the equivalent of $170 billion in today's money on the historic Apollo program - a price that would seem to be but a pittance compared to that of building a moon base - yet researchers investigating the feasibility of such a project believe that setting up a lunar outpost could cost as little as $10 billion - a fraction of the cost of putting the first humans on the moon.
"For a variety of very good reasons, it is time to go back to the moon, this time to stay, and funding is no longer the main hurdle," said NASA astrobiologist Chris McKay.

"When the cost of a short stay on the Moon drops into the tens of millions of dollars per person, it starts to tap into the same market that has given us private spaceflight participants to the International Space Station."

"The presence of a government base is also the presence of a customer on the Moon - a factor that can stimulate the development of services, supplies, and technology to the benefit of all."

You didn't answer me last time so I'll ask again, why would Obama be embarrassed by a decision made by George W. Bush? Oh for goodness sake, are you really trying to say that mr. O shouldn't be embarrassed by having to rely on the Russkies? He's the one been in charge for eight years, and his own government have been trying all they can to antagonise and belittle Russia as much as they possibly can. I

Oh for goodness sake, are you really trying to say that mr. O shouldn't be embarrassed by having to rely on the Russkies? No, I'm trying to say that you should be thoroughly embarrassed by your post. Either haven't got a clue what you are talking about or else are deliberately distorting the truth for political reasons. Let's add some reality to counter your nonsense shall we? The reason the US has to rely on Russian launches is because George W. Bush ended the shuttle programme. He did that for the best of reasons, it had just killed a second crew. Bush's idea was to replace the shuttle with ... [More]

Let's add some reality to counter your nonsense shall we? ... etc .... grief, if someone rubs you up the wrong way you really don't mind how rude you are to them do you. I suspect this little rant was prompted by the belief that I was some tedious old republican attacking poor old Mr. O again, in which case you really do know absolutely nothing about me, which is ironic because you're at pains to ... Bush's idea ... "Bush's idea..." That's the funniest thing I've heard so far this year.

Couldn't Obama have introduced an interim manned program to avoid any problems with Russia? After all, there is no guarantee America will be back in space by 2017: something might go wrong (e.g like the delays in the shuttle program). The Atlas V can place up to 18 ton into LEO, more than enough for a spaceship to go to the ISS. He could have also ordered the development of a LOX/RP-1 engine to replace the RD-180 in case the Russians got stroppy. An interim program would have put less pressure on NASA to get the SLS up and running at a time when relations with Russia are sinking fast. Moving t... [More]

Moving the Commercial Crew Program forward was the interim manned programme. The reason it has been delayed is its budget was always lower than the President requested (until the most recent budget I believe). Obama wanted the Commercial Crew Program, Congress wanted the Orion Program. Commercial Crew, therefore, was underfunded. The idea of problems with Russia makes good headlines but was never really an issue. The ISS needs both the US and Russian halves operating. If the Russians refused to launch US astronauts then they too would have to abandon the ISS. Even when the Crew Dragon and CST-... [More]

Chinese can do it at a fraction of this cost

Chinese can do it at a fraction of this cost Actually at the moment the Chinese can't do it at any cost, they don't have a launch vehicle powerful enough.
