The marble that encased the stone slab has been removed for the first time in almost five centuries.
Believed to be the 'burial bed' on which Christ's body was laid following his crucifixion, the stone shelf is situated in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and is enclosed within a structure known as the Edicule which was constructed in 1808 after the previous one was destroyed in a fire.

The last time the slab's marble casing had been lifted up was all the way back in 1555.

"We were surprised by the amount of fill material beneath it," said archaeologist Fredrik Hiebert. "It will be a long scientific analysis, but we will finally be able to see the original rock surface on which, according to tradition, the body of Christ was laid."
The lifting of the slab, which is being undertaken as part of restoration work within the church, is being filmed as part of a new National Geographic documentary.

"We are at the critical moment for rehabilitating the Edicule," said Chief Scientific Supervisor Antonia Moropoulu from the National Technical University of Athens.

"The techniques we're using to document this unique monument will enable the world to study our findings as if they themselves were in the tomb of Christ."

Humm... Looks like a rock shelf. I find the marble slab dating to the Crusades to be really cool however. I wonder if Jesus would have a problem with people venerating such a physical object? Also, it occurs to me that this isn't the "Final Resting Spot", of Jesus, but just where he laid down for two and a half days. He's reportedly with the Father now, and not here on Earth. I wonder if they are going to check the debris they cleaned out for tiny particles? They might find tiny fragments of cloth, or something with DNA in it.

Genesis 50:4-6New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) "4 When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph addressed the household of Pharaoh, “If now I have found favor with you, please speak to Pharaoh as follows: 5 My father made me swear an oath; he said, ‘I am about to die. In the tomb that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.’ Now therefore let me go up, so that I may bury my father; then I will return.” 6 Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.” "   Mark 15:42-45New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) The B... Must be wonderful for tourism, this stuff, but I suspect JC would chide people who fixate on "holy archaeolgy", as fools.

Daniel 6:16-24New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) "16 Then the king gave the command, and Daniel was brought and thrown into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you faithfully serve, deliver you!” 17 A stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, so that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no food was brought to him, and sleep fled from him. I think sometimes Davros spins a wheel of random things, on what to post. Sometimes Memes and sometimes Scriptures. Without context it can be hard to figure out what the hell he's on about.

Update: Shrine Over Jesus' Tomb in Danger of 'Catastrophic' CollapseThe shrine is built over the cave where Jesus was supposedly buried. Scientists say it could fail catastrophically without further repair. A shrine built over a cave that is revered as the tomb of Jesus is in danger of "catastrophic" collapse, according to a report by National Geographic. The shrine (or the "Edicule," as it is often called) is located within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. According to legend, Helena, the mother of emperor Constantine the Great (A.D. 272-337) visited Jerusalem in the fourth cent... [More]

Maybe someone was laid to rest there or something, maybe not. Doubt Jesus was entombed there. The religious leaders would want it to be on what they consider holy ground. But their holy ground came to be for its importance recognized by many. Jesus was entombed in the rich man's personal tomb outside of any official sacred space except to him and a few others maybe if part of an inherited property. When he was executed and then a few loons claimed he came back most had enough of hearing about miracles and now were without a doubt it was all a hoax. Kooks who hoax are forgotten quickly in popula... [More]
