Russia to offer tourists spacewalks for $100M

How much would you be willing to pay for a trip in to space ? Image Credit: NASA
The super-rich could soon have the opportunity to fly to the ISS and experience a spacewalk for themselves.
The space tourism industry has been a little quiet in recent years, with the last space tourist having flown up to the International Space Station all the way back in 2009.

This may all be set to change in the not-too-distant future however thanks to a new initiative that could offer tourists the opportunity to undertake an actual spacewalk for an eye-watering $100 million.

"Market analysts have confirmed [that] wealthy people are ready to pay money for this," said Vladimir Solntsev, the president of Russia's partly state-owned space company Energia.
If all goes to plan, a new module capable of carrying up to six space tourists to the ISS could be ready for launch by as early as next year, with the proposed spacewalks being planned for soon after.

"Basically it will be comfortable, as much as that is possible in space," said Solntsev.

To date only seven tourists have ever launched in to space, with the first being former NASA scientist Dennis Tito who stayed aboard the ISS for 8 days in 2001 at a cost of around $20 million.

The last space tourist was Guy Laliberte whose 11-day trip to the ISS in 2009 cost him $40 million.
