Pence: US Space Force to be set up by 2020

Trump's plan to establish American dominance in space could be set in motion sooner rather than later.
Back in June, the US President announced the formation of a new branch of the US military - a 'space force' that will help to prevent countries such as China and Russia taking the lead off-world.

Now Vice President Mike Pence has revealed more details about the proposed new military service.

"Now the time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America's best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation," he said.

"The time has come to establish the United States Space Force."
While it is unclear exactly what form the new force will take or what it will be doing, it is likely that the defense of US satellites against foreign attack will be high on the agenda.

The development of advanced new spacefaring technologies will probably also be on the cards.

According to Pence, the US administration will be working with congress on the plan and a budget will be outlined next year. At present, it is hoped that the new force will be fully operational by 2020.

What about fixing Detroit or the gun violence of Chicago? Or how about helping New Orleans, Puerto Rico? I feel the USA has bigger domestic issues then playing Star Wars...

This is a serious issue. U.S. space satellites are vulnerable to attack. In his consultation with the President and the National Security Council, vice-President Pence is absolutely correct. We need this defensive capability. True, there are classified non-satellite communication abilities, but our satellites are important nonetheless, and they must be protected.

I dont think thats really being debated. The question is do we need an entirely new branch of armed forces to do so.  We talk about so much serious stuff on here this I just cant help but have some fun with this one

Oh, so we just do nothing as other countries develop and deploy specific anti-satellite technologies? Think again. A United States "Space Force" is very much needed to address this very real threat with all it's complexities. Don't like it? Too bad.

No you're completely missing the point. We have NASA we have the Navy and we have the Air Force all working on these things. The question is do we really need to invest in the infrastructure for a new military branch when we already have the best and the brightest working on the problems you laid out.

Yes, buried within and split among several branches that aren't giving it the attention it deserves. If they combined the roles of Air Force Space Command, US Army Space Command, Naval Space Command and the NRO into one joint services Space Command, that  would eliminate a lot of redundant headquarters-level assignments. It would also end inter-service/inter-agency rivalries over new missions and funding. Jurisdictional disputes would be gone, making decision-making faster and more efficient, and eliminating duplicated offices would save money. While at first a Space Force would largely do wh...
