Mobile network balloon sparks UFO scare

Loon aims to provide Internet access to rural areas. Image Credit: YouTube / Project Loon The object, which was spotted floating eerily through the heavens above several townships in the area, was met with puzzled glances from locals and prompted several UFO reports on social media.

As it turned out however, the object was actually a special type of balloon used to help extend the reach of mobile network coverage in to areas where Internet access isn't readily available.The firm responsible - Loon LLC - is owned by Google's parent company Alphabet.

The balloons are placed high up in the stratosphere and users can access the network - which offers up to 4G speeds - using a special antenna attached to the outside of their building.

Just how many of these balloons the company intends to launch however remains unclear.
