Doubts cast on 1988 Shroud of Turin study

A new analysis has cast doubt on the findings of a controversial study into the authenticity of the shroud.
During the original study back in 1988, radiocarbon dating was used to determine that the Shroud of Turin - which is believed by many to be the actual burial cloth of Jesus himself - dated to between 1260 and 1390, suggesting that it was in fact a medieval forgery.

Now though, by obtaining the original data through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, a new team of researchers has determined that these results may in fact be unreliable.

"For almost 30 years, scholars asked in vain for the raw data from the three laboratories and the supervising institution, the British Museum," said study leader Tristan Casabianca.
"I graduated in law, so I had the idea to make a legal request based on the Freedom of Information Act. The British Museum was the only institution to fully and quickly answer my request."

It turned out that the original tests had been conducted only on the very edges of the cloth and that the results may have been affected by a fire at the Sainte-Chapelle in 1532.

"The tested samples are obviously heterogeneous from many different dates," said Casabianca. "There is no guarantee that all these samples, taken from one end of the shroud, are representative of the whole fabric."

"It is, therefore, impossible to conclude that the Shroud of Turin dates from the Middle Ages."

So we have criticized the 1988 study, but failed to conduct one of our own.  The 13th century date is still the best one available. If the figure in the shroud does not look Jewish, it may be because it is Jacques DeMolay.  The shroud's provinence goes back to DeMolay's grandson who claimed it was an altar cloth used by the Knights Templar.  DeMolay was tortured in an imitation of Jesus' torture and placed on the altar cloth before being burned at the stake. The shroud is, thus, not a deliberate forgery, and an accidental one. Doug

I am descended from Sir William Warren III, one of William the Conqueror's retainers.  Our coat-of-arms is displayed at Battle Abbey. Sir William was the richest man in the world at the time.  He owned whole countries.  He died from a cross-bow accident while hunting on the old battlefield.  His daughter, Mary, married Guthram, son of the MacDuff clan chief.  I am a descendent of MacDuff. No postcard never mind, how about a T-shirt?  ~

Only have one T-shirt.  It has Smokey the Bear on it and says:  "Remember.  Only you can prevent forest fires."  Then it adds:  "Seriously, we've been defunded.  It's just you now."  It was a souvenir from 2017 when Trump defunded the fire services. Maybe I can find one for you.  What size do you wear? Doug

Is this it?   https://www.northernsun.com/Smokey-Bear-TShirt-(8578).html I am going to order one.  I have a huge t-shirt collection.  Planning on making quilts with them when I have worn them out.

Mine has Smokey on a black background.  I have a Smokey the Bear costume which I used to wear for Fourth of July parades and Halloween.  Can hardly walk now, so no parades and I don't trick-or-treat, so I don't have much use for it. Doug
