UM-Bot Posted October 15, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2007 More like inland seas than lakes, the Great Lakes of North America are among the most treacherous bodies of water in the world. Terrible seasonal storms batter ships that choose to sail the lakes at the wrong time of year. These great gales, called the Witch of November, have claimed many lives and ships over the years, the most famous of which was the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. ~ MacDDT ~ Posted October 15, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 15, 2007 The lakes are bad for storms, I've never seen a ghost out there but I almost became one fishing in lake Erie lol We were way out fishing one time and the weather turned from clear blue and sunny skies with a few white clouds to a black raging storm with six foot waves in an hour, when we were trying to get back to the marina we heard on the 2way radio that the marina was being pelted with hail (ya that's what I was thinking TORNADO!) I was steering our boat(26ft) and I asked my Dad what we should do now , he told me to "Head back out into deeper water" I still remember turning my head slowly and giving him that WTF look but I took it out and in about 20 min it was all clear again. I'm not sure how much water we took on (I didn't want to open the hatch and look) but heading back to the marina the bilge pump was pumping water from our boat the whole time , when we got to the marina it was a mess the buildings were fine but three trees were down and branches and debrie were everywhere. the official report was severe thunderstorm (we never seen any lightning ..wierd now that I think of it) oh and I did catch two rainbow trout that day (5lb 7lb)

m. Moe Posted October 16, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 16, 2007 I've spent a couple of weeks on lake Ontario, never seen any ghosts either, but honestly they would have been the least of my worries.

FairyJosie25 Posted October 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 16, 2007 Yeah.... my mom's from Minnesota, so we go visit my family there from time to time. I'm making a mental note now, not to get on a ship or boat on those lakes EVER.....
