"This ranks among the most morally illicit acts, ethically speaking," said Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, the Vatican department that helps oversee the Church's position on bioethics issues.

''Hypocrites at 12 O'Clock you copy Eagle One, over...''

Like they really give a holy rats butt.

If the Vatican/Church really wanted and or could have stopped it they would have done, a long time ago.

This part here...

''Vatican department that helps oversee the Church's position on bioethics issues.'' ...

And I recall a member ever so slightly freak'n out at me in the religion threads a while back stating the Vatican has nothing to do with the RCC when I questioned their relationship or is that partnership together over the many many years. hmmmmm...

No disrespect to anyones faith or beliefs intended.

"This ranks among the most morally illicit acts" They're a good bunch to talk about morals. Recent court cases and scandals have provent the church to be just so full of human error and immorality as us regular folks.

So they are not holier than though.

No disrespect intended.

Well, their morals are very different to those OUTSIDE the Vatican. Morals aren't a pre-set programme shared by everyone, if they see it as immoral, then don't conduct stem-cell research and don't expect to use any stem-cells when the popes kidneys fail.

Sgreccia said, given the alternatives, he could not understand why scientists wanted to use human embryos -- which the Roman Catholic Church believes should be protected.

So.... I suppose we should all beat women once every month. I mean, we have to protect those human embryo's! They're wasting them! Those evil women! No wonder god likes you less! . Oh the stupidity of the Vatican. Rather them be wasted than for them to be put to use. Unless science is using them for a good cause of course.

All disrespect intended.

That's just it. They're only human like everybody else. I guess cloning is FAR worse illicit act than exploiting small children sexually. Good call Vatican. Maybe if they would stop sitting on their gold chairs and being served hand and foot, they could actually invest their time and actually DO something about it, then I would personally, maybe consider showing a bit of respect. As far as I'm concern, nobody in the Vatican will ever be as great as Ghandi or Mother Theresa, to name a few. Never. I don't consider having the Pope driving by, waving at people, my assured redemption to Heaven. Sorry.

I'm going to go ahead and assume anyone who is pro-life will, by default, object to stem cell research. I'm pro-choice and see nothing wrong with it. The whole cloning process might increase our understand in that department and increase our capacity to clone things as well.

It isn't about Pro-Life...

Do the Vatican somehow save every single Embryo five days before a womans period? What if she doesn't want to get pregnant, four years later she's rid herself of 48 embryo's. Does the pope condemn them? But hey, it's science, the devils work.

It's basically the Vatican thinking they have a say in a matter. When they only have a small voice in anything they do - which just so happens to involve churches, nothing else.

The worst kind of human exploitation!? what about the 3rd world starving people? or even the women forced to sell themselves? but no it's the babies given to the families who can't have babies themselves. i bet they wouldn't complain if the babies gave money to the collection plate every week

Yet another example of the Vatican failing to keep pace with scientific progress.

Scientific progress is not moral or immoral. It's just a revealing of fact. A revealing of how the Deity formed the universe. An intelligent religious response would be to call scientists, philosophers, and clergy together and to try and figure out how the new understanding could be used in a moral manner. But alas. Since the Catholic Church is unwilling to admit that it didn't already know everything worth knowing 2000 years ago, it is refusing to interact with this latest piece of progress in a socially useful manner.

Maybe 500 years from now the Catholic Church will issue an apology for condemning cloning, just as they issued an apology for rejecting Galileo's theory that the earth rotated around the sun 500 years after his death.
