Images of an orangutan mother catching a rope and using it to get herself and her baby across a flooded river have emerged, demonstrating both the intelligence of these primates and the lengths they'll go to in order to protect their young from danger.
Amazing pictures have been captured of an orangutan catching a rope thrown to her by humans and swimming across a flooded river to save her baby. It is a long-held belief that orangutans are petrified of water, but the WWF officials in Malaysia who threw her the rope said the mother did not appear to even hesitate before leaping into the river with her baby on her back."

A Mother's love cannot be measured, human or not. Some animals like certain fish and insects kill their young to survive, or kill deformed babies. Yes, in other animals, a mother's love for her baby is more of a survival instinct than an intellectual process, but what the article refers to as an intellectual process is actually the ability of the mother orangutan to use the man-made rope as an aid to swim over. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Humans are very arrogant to assume that animals have much lesser intelligence and wouldn't have sense enough to save their own. Oh, animals commu... [More]

Unlike animals, humans are very troubled creatures. We deal with the problems we create in our society, all of which stem from our uncontrollably wild imaginations and our supreme ego-selfs. What a crock! If you were sitting in a tree ... [More]

Yes, in other animals, a mother's love for her baby is more of a survival instinct than an intellectual process, Agreed. Some species will eliminate the weak to survive as part of their instinct. It's the law of the jungle, sort of speak. but what the article refers to as an intellectual process is actually the ability of the mother orangutan to use the man-made rope as an aid to swim over. I understood the article just fine. The mother orangutan could have easily ditched her child to save herself ... [More]

Some animals like certain fish and insects kill their young to survive, or kill deformed babies. true, but also some humans do the same. It was common praxis in some ancient society, and nowaday we abortion. So humans vs other animal. We are different, yes, but no so much.

The mother orangutan could have easily ditched her child to save herself with that rope. Putting a child's safety before one's own is a sign of intelligence after all. On the contrary. Intelligence is a combination of imagination, the capability to adapt for survival, and free will, which is a by product of imagination. If the mother ditched her child to save herself with that rope, it would be considered an action of free will, because the mother's instinct is to save the baby first. Free will is the ability to use imagination to override basic instinct. Creatures governed only by instinct ar... [More]

but what the article refers to as an intellectual process is actually the ability of the mother orangutan to use the man-made rope as an aid to swim over. Yes ..because it has always been known that apes don't know how to swing on ropes....

. Creatures governed only by instinct are no different from programmable robots with self-learning algorithms. Heres a thought you might like to ponder... If the Bible is right and Jesus or god are gonna come back to earth...or whatever...I would bet that the "programmable robots" that you refer to...will be the first to recognize them... Animals are not robots or anyhting like them...animals are equal to humans in my opinion....actually better, they can't be hateful or spiteful...or evil..like we can...yes they are of a slightly lower intellect....but not as low as you think...and smarter tha...
