Possible Earth-like planets found

Two new extrasolar planets have been discovered which appear to be similar to Earth, one is about the correct size and is the smallest extrasolar planet ever found, while the second is in a prime habitable zone for potential life.
In the search for Earth-like planets, astronomers zeroed in Tuesday on two places that look awfully familiar to home. One is close to the right size. The other is in the right place. European researchers said they not only found the smallest exoplanet ever, called Gliese 581 e, but realized that a neighboring planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable zone for potential life."

Maybe I'm wrong but just doing a little math it would take a ship traveling at 35 000 km/h 5541325714 years to get there...now how many generations is that?? The real trick with these sort of trips is to have constant acceleration, not constant velocity. Here on earth, the force of gravity is equivalent to a downwards acceleration of 9.81 m/s^2. If our space craft had enough fuel to sustain that acceleration for the entire trip (makes for comfortable living), soon the spacecraft would be going fast enough for all those nifty relativistic effects to kick in. The space craft would accelerate tow... [More]

I think it's a great discovery that these planets have been found but i really do believe that at the same time humans need to learn as well as start trying to fix the problems that we have created on this planet. We have been and still are slowly killing earth and that cycle will continue wherever we go if we do not learn from our mistakes both present and past. Now im not taking myself out when i say this but, this is also one of those thing that takes a millon and one, not just one in a millon to be effective.. So once that happens i will be at peace with the idea of humans maybe moving to ... [More]

We dont need to worry about going there any more than Newton had to worry about how to get to the moon... that's a problem for people in two or three hundred years.

It's excellent news! Talking of impatience to go there, why not make it possible to include that on your next holiday to-do list?

Maybe if we put some racing stripes on the space ship we can shave some time off the trip put a spoiler on it and put something on the exhaust so its louder. that should make it go 0.00001 mm/s faster

How I wish I was born 100-200 years from now. I want to experience riding a spacecraft and living on another planet. It seems like a fun adventure.
