A new solar device that can convert solar energy in to transportable fuel has been developed.
The device is to said to mimic plants in that it converts sunlight, carbon dioxide and water in to energy. This latest development is another step forward in the widespread uptake of solar powered solutions.
A prototype solar device has been unveiled which mimics plant life, turning the Sun's energy into fuel. The machine uses the Sun's rays and a metal oxide called ceria to break down carbon dioxide or water into fuels which can be stored and transported.

It looks good on paper, except that nasty inefficent thing. Even at 19% efficiency I don't think the industry would adopt it.

Look promising. But if it works like plants, wouldn't it produce oxygen instead of fuel?

Look promising. But if it works like plants, wouldn't it produce oxygen instead of fuel? No. 'Like' means similar.

Yeah surely it will be cheaper to produce if it becomes more efficient and durable. It would eliminate the need for expensive high quality silicon which is used in present day solar panels and cells. This could make solar energy available to a large portion of society due to reduced price. Edit: I guess it contains Quartz which is also a silicon based compound so it won't reduce any production price unless it proves to be more efficient than the modern day panels.

Has anyone seen the documentary "Fuel" ? There is a power plant that uses algae , sewage and sun light to produce crude oil and gasoline made from that crude oil burns clean. that is what i would call a step in the right direction because it covers all areas, not only fuel but waste disposal and means of making plastics and rubber
