Secrets of Antarctica's fossilised forests

We tend to think of Antarctica as a frozen mass but science is showing that it wasn't always so.
First discovered nearly 100 years ago by explorer Robert Falcon Scott sedimentary layers beneath the ice covering Antarctica prove that it hasn't always been a virtually solid block of ice. Fossilised leaves and twigs show that there were once forests covering that part of the planet, some wonder if global warming won't revive these long forgotten forests.
It may be hard to believe, but Antarctica was once covered in towering forests. One hundred million years ago, the Earth was in the grip of an extreme Greenhouse Effect. The polar ice caps had all but melted; in the south, rainforests inhabited by dinosaurs existed in their place. These Antarctic ecosystems were adapted to the long months of winter darkness that occur at the poles, and were truly bizarre.

So was Antartica always "down there" or did it drift south when the super-continent broke up ? No it wasn't always there. See below So this leans towards the argument of global warming being part natural and not ALL our fault right? Global warming is a natural cycle. Both of you go to the PALEOMAP Project. You will see a graph of temperature fluctuations since the Precambrian period as well as maps of the continental drift, to +250 Ma.

So this leans towards the argument of global warming being part natural and not ALL our fault right? And yet they still got it backwards in the article, saying that the runaway green house effect was due to high C02 levels instead of the other way around.

So was Antartica always "down there" or did it drift south when the super-continent broke up ? Did you read the article? The fossil in the photograph was only 3 million years old. Much too recent for continental drift to have had much if any significance.

Global warming can also be cause by our sun. Just like right now you cant really blame all the global warming on us along. Scientist have said that the sun is getting warmer and this is causing our planet to warm up as well. They also tell us how mars and other planets are warming up as well. Antarctica wasnt always there. We honestly have no real idea when it drifted down there. We have a date range but that really doesnt help. For all we know the polar shift theory is correct and it drifted down there when it still had all that life on it and we could have been in a global warming phase and ... [More]

Interesting indeed , lets hope they find something man made , that would make for some debate . TiP.

pretty interesting, i think ive heard that the north pole was once all marsh land...but i may be mistaken very mistaken. The north pole is under the arctic OCEAN.

Global warming caused by man was a lie. Plant an idea and people will run with it. if the Earth didn't go through temperature changes that would be more of an anomaly than the idea of global warming. It takes attention away from "other problems" like ZOMBIES jk. but really. but what is now the arctic was once a tropical paradise I hear.

So this leans towards the argument of global warming being part natural and not ALL our fault right? Tssss if it was natural, government couldn't taxed us to death.. so no it's was our fault even 100 000 years ago

I like how an extremely interesting article like this is immediately torn apart by global warming phobics and conspiracy theorists, It'd be amusing if it wasn't so sad. That being said, thanks for the news -- really painted a vivid picture of a true lost world!
