While excavating a site near the University of York, scientists unearth a skull with a brain inside
Everyone knows (or eventually learns) that when we die, we return to the earth as our bodies decay, leaving behind only bone. Imagine the surprise of scientists then at the discovery of a brain thousands of years old - its the earliest find of its kind in Britain and one of the earliest ever found worldwide.
Scientists have been baffled by how the brain tissue - which usually rots after a couple at years - managed to remain intact for so long. 'The survival of brain remains where no other soft tissues are preserved is extremely rare,' said Sonia O'Connor, research fellow in archaeological sciences at the University of Bradford.
