The famous shroud believed to depict the image of Christ may have been made by medieval artist Giotto.
Controversy has surrounded the authenticity of the shroud for years, alleged to be the burial cloth of Jesus the shroud has been carbon-dated to the 13th-14th century. Now a new claim by Italian art expert Luciano Buso suggests the original shroud may have deteorated so badly that medieval artist Giotto was tasked with producing a copy.
The Shroud of Turin was made by medieval artist Giotto, it was claimed yesterday. The 14ft length of fabric, said to be the burial cloth of Christ, bears a faint image of a man and appears to be stained by blood.
