Scientists have managed to monitor in considerable detail a human brain as it falls unconscious.
The technique is able to detect the waxing and waning of electrical activity within the brain, as a person falls unconscious different areas appear to be 'talking' to one another, however the specific reasons behind this are not yet understood.
Although regions of the brain seem to be communicating as "consciousness fades", Professor Pollard cautions that it is early days and that he and his team from the University of Manchester still have many brain scans to analyse before they can say anything conclusive about what is happening.

Wow! This is a cool discovery, but how did they find this out. Did they actually get a real person and connect all these things on the brain to see what it does when it falls unconscious. It's really cool though. Wonder what parts shut down and others that still function in an unconscious brain!

They can run that test on a few of my colleagues to see how the brain lapses into unconsciousness without anesthetics...
