US poll: 3 in 10 interpret Bible literally

A Gallup poll has revealed that three in ten Americans believe the Bible should be interpreted literally.
This number has declined over the last 40 years, down at least 7% since the early 1980's. The poll also found a political connection with 42 percent of Republicans, 23 percent of independents and 27 percent of Democrats taking the Bible literally word for word.
Modern society frequently challenges the Bible as the actual word of God. However, a recent Gallup poll reveals that three in 10 Americans interpret the Bible literally, saying it is the actual word of God to be interpreted literally, word for word.

Yes I see and have seen the contradiction. I was just guessing at what the believers who take the bible literally would say when asked why they aren't out killing. There will always be the - yea but no but yea but ...yeaa it says ohh SHAT UP...YOU DONT KNOW NUFFIN ABOUT NUFFIN -- My Vicky Pollard Impression lol

3 in every 10 Americans = millions .. do the math lol You see, BM, they can interview ten people and say that represents the entire population. But they didn't actually interview millions of people, so one shouldn't immediately accept this as accurate.

But they didn't actually interview millions of people, so one shouldn't immediately accept this as accurate. So you think in your head - it must only mean like 3 people? really?? So they would do all of this for 3 people? I don't think so, .I think it was a heck of a lot more...

So you think in your head - it must only mean like 3 people? really?? So they would do all of this for 3 people? I don't think so, .I think it was a heck of a lot more... Obviously it was more, to be a legitimate study. It was just an example, BM. I was just providing a point, it wasn't meant to be taken literally. I didn't actually believe that it was 10 people, only that it was a tiny bit short of millions. It is supposed to represent millions, but I can't help but question the accuracy of such statistics. Because you CAN ask 10 people a question and than act as if your findings reflect the ... [More]

Perhaps. Personally, I can say that the vast majority of the people I know here in Central Louisiana believe in the literal truth of the Bible, that it is the inerrant word of God. No question. The Bible is law. living in southeast alabama, i know many who also take the bible as literal truth. thats why we in the south are called the bible belt. so using personal experience and relying on your take on your area, i deduce the vast majority in my beloved south are idiots.

Because you CAN ask 10 people a question and than act as if your findings reflect the global population. They polled 1018 adults. They claim it is 95% accurate +/- 4%. I find it hard to believe that the opinions of 300 million people can be accurately gauge... [More]

I figured the number would be greater...it seems I run into the 30% ALL THE TIME. "My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee..." -Hosea 4:6 It all come down to a lack of knowledge, we are taught a very limited amount by Western/Mainstream Christianity. It seems the majority would rather be told what to do and how to think within the religious body. They are kept stagnant and complacent. Those shall never grow and mature....they shall perish so to say in religious terms. It's not really complicated, there is no real moving for... [More]

95% +/- 4%? What the hell, what makes them say that? Take a random sample of a cross section of a community, if you get enough (say 1000 or 2000 people) then the sample size is large enough to suggest that this is more or less representative of the larger community with 95% accuracy (+/- 4% it seems to compensate for any over-representation in the sample that may occur by pure chance). With a sample size of a thousand or two thousand people, randomness will give a random cross section, you're not likely to encounter 1000 people who all believe the same thing unless it is generally agreed upon ... And 100% of that 30% are allowed to breed and vote. (shivers)
