Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel has pumped $1.25 million in to the project to help it become a reality.
In a plan that sounds like something out of the plot of popular video game Bioshock, the Seasteading Institute plan to build their floating city in international waters so that they and like-minded thinkers can live there in their own self-established ocean state.
The Silicon Valley billionaire has funnelled $1. 25million to the Seasteading Institute, an organisation that aspires to launch a floating colony into international waters, freeing them and like-minded thinkers to live by libertarian ideals.

Ehhh sounds stupid to me. Like xanthurion said. Hurricanes will be a big issue. Also, by floating I thought it meant literally floating not a city held up by a slab of land being supported by 4 beams. :/ Flooding will also be an issue depending on how high it will be. But how do people plan on getting on and away from this "floating city" without aircraft? So it's for a few well-off rich people to live on? This is a bad idea and I don't think it should ever come to fruition for several reasons.

Hmmm... maybe Atlantis was a man made floating city and not an actual continent. ;-) Interesting thought! yeah floating city in the middle of the ocean so a hurricane can whiz by and tear it apart in two seconds Can't say I'd like to be "in the city" when that happened. Can't imagine they can make it storm proof. Hope they've picked their spot well.

You cant ever escape man wanting control over other men, its a genetic flaw in man kind. Even though its a great idea before they know it there will be those telling others how to live, how to pay for it and what they can and cannot have or do. Man is a flawed, control FREAK of nature.

What's new? Here in the Netherlands they already build floating houses. Near Amsterdam, on the IJ lake, they build a whole floating district (or barrio, what's the word?). You wouldn't believe what they use for 'fundaments': styrofoam. .

Even if this gets built, it wont last. The sea will devour it. Look at what happened to Atlantis (according to myth and legend). The first big storm, earthquake or title wave will wash it away like if nothing was ever there. What a waste of money that is going to be spent on this.

This idiot has no clue as to what he is trying to establish. Where do they get food? Buy it from a nearby nation and take it back? Then it's called import/export, and individual treaties need to be established. What happens if they build a commercial vessel? Who is named the "flag state"? Those are completely NEW treaties that need to be set up. Shipping lanes may need to be negotiated, passport and visa issues need to be resolved, and what the heck do they do with their waste? There are international treaties established (MARPOL treaties) that deal with dumping "at sea". Where do they get the... [More]
