Calls are being answered for an international code of conduct to govern off-world exploration practices.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stated America's interests in co-operating with other countries in an effort to agree upon guidelines to help maintain the sustainability of space travel in to the future. One of the most pressing matters will be to reduce the amount of space debris that is building up in orbit. "As we begin this work, the United States has made clear to our partners that we will not enter into a code of conduct that in any way constrains our national security-related activities in space or our ability to protect the United States and our allies," said Clinton.
NASA estimates that the cloud of orbital debris surrounding Earth contains more than 22,000 pieces as big as a softball and more than 500,000 bigger than a marble. Only 1,100 of those objects are active satellites, according to a State Department statement.

It should be just as effective as the Code of Conduct for Earth... That one has worked really well these past 6,000 years or so... How the heck are they going to enforce/monitor it?... More importantly... WHO is going to monitor/enforce it?...

You see? If people need to be told how to behave in outer space - and it would have to be policed by an international agency too - then we're just not ready to leave the planet.

This space junk could only have been created by two countries,so why cant they get rid of it,especially when the Chinese,Indians, and others are gradually getting up there. There would be a big problem if the junk hit a space vehicle...no survivors, and we dont want anyone killed. The "code of conduct"could be a failure,as anyone can do anything up there without anyone knowing,do-svedahnya

maybe we dont need to think about the asteroids out there :-) 22000 malfunction pieces due to a huge solar storm X into our direction could lead to the same effect.
