Astronomers have discovered a distant extrasolar water planet shrouded in a thick steamy atmosphere.
It is the first planet of its kind ever found, at almost three times the size of the Earth it consists of both water and high temperatures resulting in an alien environment never seen before. "GJ 1214b is like no planet we know of," said study author Zachory Berta. "The high temperatures and pressures would form exotic materials like 'hot ice' or 'superfluid water', substances that are completely alien to our everyday experience."
"Astronomers believe the planet is an entirely new classification of celestial body, with the mixture of water and high temperatures meaning there is a chance new alien materials could have been produced."
