UM-Bot Posted September 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2004 A team of doctors from Louisville and the Netherlands says in a new medical journal article that it is ready to perform a face transplant, a procedure considered controversial by some medical ethicists. "There arrives a point in time when the procedure should simply be done. We submit that that time is now," the researchers wrote in an article scheduled for publication Friday in The American Journal of Bioethics. thebarman Posted September 20, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2004 I'm curious as to whether the person would look like the face donor as it's their face, look like themselves as it's their bone structure underneath or look like a totally different person altogether. Also I can't see any reason why this should be considered unethical, so long as the donor has agreed to it after their death and the patient is happy with their new face I don't see the problem. Maybe some people took the film "Face Off" a little too seriously
Michelle Posted September 20, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 20, 2004 Even if someone was an organ door wouldn't it seem like you would have to have the permission of the family? It's something that would be a shock if you saw them after the surgery and didn't know it was done.

Benjo Koolzooie Posted September 23, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 23, 2004 People kidnapping people for their faces - I don't see any really major problems with this prodecdure, as long as all the permission is acquired, and as long as the person getting the face tranplant really does need it, not just somebody that thinks that they are "ugly". thebarman Posted September 23, 2004 #8 Share Posted September 23, 2004 not just somebody that thinks that they are "ugly". 277035[/snapback] Why deny ugly people a new face? How do you define someone who 'actually' needs a face transplant? Severe scarring? Deformaty? Surely they would be having a face transplant because they arn't happy with their appearance, same as someone who thinks they're ugly. If they're willing to pay for it why shouldn't ugly people have it done too?
zygon Posted September 23, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 23, 2004 lol, my first thought when i read this was of 'face off' i think it would be a little odd having someone elses face...
Althalus Posted September 23, 2004 #10 Share Posted September 23, 2004 As it has already been partly done, with that girl who had her face ripped off, it is only the next logical step, although the scarring and rejection would be horrific.
