Can UFOs cause air accidents ?

Could the distraction of a UFO sighting during a flight be enough to cause a collision or crash ?

Over the years there have been numerous pilot reports of strange objects in the skies. During World War II, fighter pilots on both sides reported fiery glowing objects ( nicknamed 'Foo Fighters' ) following their planes and engaging in wild maneuvers. In more recent times commercial pilots have also reported seeing unusual objects buzzing their aircraft, but to date no crashes have ever been directly attributed to a collision with or a distraction caused by a UFO.

In 1948 however an alleged UFO pursuit did result in a fatality. Four P-51s had been scrambled to intercept an object estimated to be 300ft wide. While three of the planes broke off the pursuit, the fourth pilot climbed to 25,000 ft without oxygen before blacking out and crash landing.

I didn't want to mention the Valentich case again because that one is the most familiar and has been discussed a great deal over the years. This one has never been explained either. Even a mundane explanation cannot be confirmed considering the location without an act of God or a most amazing stroke of pure luck. One of the most treacherous stretches in the Southern Hemisphere. That one will always remain a mystery. His last transmission is truly something to ponder over. Strange noises, like metal scraping. It really is a great story. On the surface, it seems like a viable experience and well corroborated within the story itself. It is well known that he was a poor pilot? I've never heard of that psyche. Do you have anything to substantiate that judgement? Just curious. Yeah mate, common knowledge, you will notice the UFO sites admit he did not submit a flight plan, which is a pretty basic no-no for a commercial pilot, even WIki has an excerpt on it. Valentich Frederick Valentich was born on 9 June 1958 in Melbourne. That article agrees with my personal conclusion, but I had not considered that people were calling this a hoax, and now the UFO references have me wondering. I did not realise that both Dad and Son were UFO buffs until today. Like you say, it's a bit to take in at once. But I think my initial conclusions of a crash probably remains the most likely option. I haven't had any time to thin about UFOs since I've been following the elections all day. Overall, I'm pleased with the results. Personally, I already voted for Obama a couple weeks ago and I'm glad that he did better than I expected.
