Teenager Nicole Delien suffers from a rare sleeping disorder known as 'Sleeping Beauty Syndrome'.
The 17-year-old can often sleep up to 19 hours a day before entering a state similar to sleepwalking in which she will get up, have something to eat and go to the bathroom. At one point she managed to sleep for 64 days consecutively, missing out on the entire Christmas season. It took her family several trips to hospital to diagnose the unusual condition which can come and go over long periods of time without warning.
In addition to excessive sleeping, the condition can also cause other symptoms such as hallucinations, disorientation, binge-eating and child-like behavior. There is no cure, however medication can help to spread the sleeping episodes further apart.
A Pennsylvania teenager slept for 64 days from Thanksgiving into January -- her longest sleeping episode yet. Nicole Delien, 17, struggles with a rare sleep disorder called Kleine-Levine, or ‘Sleeping Beauty Syndrome’.
