Neanderthal yields nuclear DNA

The first sequences of nuclear DNA to be taken from a Neanderthal have been reported at a US science meeting. Geneticist Svante Paabo and his team say they isolated the long segments of genetic material from a 45,000-year-old Neanderthal fossil from Croatia.

The work should reveal how closely related the Neanderthal species was to modern humans, Homo sapiens. Details were presented at a conference at New York's Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and reported by News@Nature.

This really makes me drool. I simply can't wait to see the analysis of this DNA strand. I've always liked the idea that the Neanderthal was an entirely separate species from homo sapiens. It would be almost as if there were an alien form of man on our own planet!

This should help resolve the debate about whether homo sapiens and Neanderethal ever interbred -- or if they were a close enough match to be able to have children together.

I always wonder about these projects, though. Not the initial integrity, but what "somebody" could do with the final results. Anyone remember Stalin's "ape army" idea? Hitler had the dream of creating "supermen" as well (and some say he used the occult to achieve it, to a degree.)

I agree, I've always wondered where Neanderthal belongs in evolution... so human like, but supposedly not related...

LOL i was thinking the same thing...when i 1st read the article i was thinking "next their gonna combine the DNA to see if humans can interbreed"

Ooh Ooh!! I can't wait to see what all they find. I love Jean Auel's Earth Children series. She has the different species sporadically interbreeding. I realize this is purely fiction unless proven, but I would love to see if that could have actually been possible.

 reminds me of the film "evolutions child", very poor story line and the science behind it was stupid. but interesting film, even though it wasn't thought through.

Can't wait to hear pof the results.

As for cloning well they did clone a spider from a amber that is millions of years old or something it lived for about a day.

But the y chromosome, this could be interesting really since it could be something that could help us maybe could even be something as imunitys to ceertain diseses etc.

Cloning time!

It`s maybe a bit early to say so, maybe in around 20 years.

Yes..... I love the idea of a non-human creature, I guess it would be called. Let us jump start the clonig machines and create some inferior beings to make slaves out of. The idea of humans as slaves sickens me, but a non-human would be great imagine...

1. Beating it when your angry, better than beating babies.

2. Do all the jobs the ILLEGAL immigrants do, send them back to mexico.

3. Housework, after all housework sucks.

4. Oh, I almost forgot about beating it just for fun, who knows it could become a sport.

Well as for making them salves no, because that would make us tyrants and personally i think making anyone salves or out would be wrong.

As for the spider cloning it did happen it lived a day and died so i think we need to get time to make the technology we have better because at the moment we don't abnd can only have a days life.

I don't have the extact link to were it says it was cloned and lived a day, but if you type in google spider found in amber cloned you should find it in there. Or at least there plans to clone it i tried finding it but i was told by a friend about it and researched it a bit and found a site with it on....

I'm not lying before anyone says

I specifically said that humans as slaves sicken me. However Neanderthal would not be human or animal. It would be a tool created by man for that sole purpose of making mans life easier. If man creates a tool, then that tool belongs to man. I think i would be great to be able to patent clones.

One more thing please spell correctly, at least about the topic. salves com'n.

Well i heard they had but well off that link then thats fine no need to argue over it.

Secondly over the topic of whether it would be right or wrong to use Neanderthal as slaves i still would disagree human or not they have a right to a life.

If we created them we would only be playing God and would be creating a lesser race for our own good would we be any different to Starlin or Hitler who tried to create a underclass to serve?
