news icon rFor an instant guide to how fast a woman can run, take a look at her hands. Women whose ring fingers are longer than their index fingers are quicker on their feet, offering a simple way of predicting who will win a race, researchers have found.

The discovery could be a boon for parents wondering whether to shell out large sums on coaching - by providing an indication of their daughter's chances of turning into a sports star.

i'm an artist, i'm a thinker, i'm a dancer, i am not a runner. my index finger is longer for sure. i do not run and would be likely to lose miserably. I do like to jog though.. maybe I should challenge one of the other joggers on the path. LOL

Wouldn't this be the same as saying big ears give you better hearing, or big feet means that you have a big.…!

I find it difficult to believe that something as simple as the length of your fingers could predict your athleticism or any other traits.

It is a fun observation. Wish they had some statistics behind it.

I remember seeing something about this on tv on some pbs type special on gender differences. It linked it specifically with testosterone levels, which would have a trickle down effect on running speed. The show presented it as a fairly tentative theory though, so don't take this as more than another reference.

I remember seeing a documentary on Discovery Home and Health talking about the stereotypes in genders. One theory that was tested was a scientist's that a longer ring finger meant more testosterone. 6 runners were given places depending on who the scientist thought was going to be first to last. He got 4 out of 6 places correct.. Unfortunately I can't quite remember the name of the program itself

I find it kind of funny scientists will conduct research on subjects of wise tales. This type of speculation is exactly the same case when predicting the baby's sex during pregnancy. If the belly is high, it's a boy, if it's low, it's a girl. I'm sure there's a tendancy, but doesn't always happen. Haha, if that were the case, my sister would be my brother instead!

If statistical results show a trend, it doesn't mean you need to push your child(ren) to do something in particular because they have a finger longer than another!

How interesting! As soon as I read this I immediately looked at my fingers. Their even. Then I asked my two male co-workers and both of their ring fingers are longer than their index fingers. Now, I don't know about the relativity of that to being active or faster, but it sure a neat conversation topic.

That is quite interesting .. wished I had seen the documentary regarding this theory/topic. My ring finger is longer then the index finger, but in my case that doesn't prove much .. according to what is being said about this trait.

:D I ran track in high school. Earned a varsity letter. I was a cheerleader in high school as well. My ring finger is shorter than my index. And I sucked at both my sports, :w00t:

What I'm waiting on is for the feminists to get a hold of this and flip out because it says the more male you are the faster runner you are...hmm...excuse me, the more testosterone you have the faster runner you are, lol.

It is one of those things you hear and say "hmmph. neat." at best. There are always exceptions, however, in my case, it was completely true, lmao. ^_^
