UM-Bot Posted December 3, 2006 #1 Share Posted December 3, 2006 Russian officials said an unidentified flying object fell out of the sky and burned on impact Friday in the taiga of East Siberia, the news agency Interfax reported. Law enforcement authorities in the Krasnoyarsk region told Interfax residents had reported seeing a "flying apparatus" plunge from the sky at about 10 a.m. Residents of the remote area, some 260 kilometres north of the regional capital of Krasnoyarsk, said the surrounding area had been charred, showing signs of a fire. Authorities, however, said they had been unable to reach the scene due to inclement weather conditions. "Investigators and transport officials are now being sent from Krasnoyarsk to establish the reasons behind the crash," a police official said. Regional authorities have not speculated about what the object might have been, but they noted a helicopter had flown over the scene and that its crew had not seen any traces of fire. The vast Siberian taiga, an area of boundless forest, famously played host to an explosion known as the "Tunguska event" in June 1908 after an object, now thought to be an asteroid or comet, slammed into a remote area north of Lake Baikal. The blast, which felled an estimated 60 million trees over 2,000 square kilometers, was later calculated to have been the equivalent of 10 to 20 megatons of TNT, similar in force to that of the most powerful nuclear bomb ever detonated, the DPA reported. Viracocha Posted December 3, 2006 #7 Share Posted December 3, 2006 (edited) I wonder what kind of ridiculous explanation they are gonna give us this time: 1. Meteor/comet 2. Weather Balloon 3. Swampgas 4. Ball Lightning 5. Flock of birds 6. Weird Cloud Formation 7. The Moon 8. Stars 9. A misguided missile 10. A bunch of fireflies 11. Spacejunk 12. A hallucination/optical illusion 13. What object? Nothing crashed at all. 14. a group of paragliders 15. Flock of birds illuminated by a group of fireflies that were lost because swampgas blocked their sight and so they flew into a descending meteorite. 16. (if all else fails) it was probably the planet Venus Any votes? Personally I go for number 15 Edited December 3, 2006 by Viracocha

Grandpa Greenman Posted December 3, 2006 #9 Share Posted December 3, 2006 Lucky Russians, they get all the fun stuff from space. Must be an Unidentified Flying Object. In other words they don't know what it was.
+joc Posted December 3, 2006 #10 Share Posted December 3, 2006 (edited) Forget the UFO...that is not what is interesting here. What IS interesting is that it is in the same area as the Tunguska Event...and it is the Tunguska Event which is interesting. I know about the Tunguska Event because my 9 year old daughter chose The Impossible Explosion as An Enigma Research paper for one of her classes. Basically ....now this is truly interesting... there was an explosion in Siberia in 1908...unexplained! A huge, massive explosion that flattened and charred trees for about 40 or 50 square miles. All of the trees were flattened as spokes of a wheel away from the center of the blast. In the center of the blast was left some trees standing and charred. In an effort to help my daughter research...I had to explain the atomic bomb...which resulted in my having to explain atomic and molecular theory at it's most basic... ...then our conversations gave way to me explaining a bit about WWII and why scientists were working on atomic weapons. It was in explaining to her nuclear fission that I discovered what most probably happened to create the Tungusaka Explosion. Atomic theory has been around since the 1800s and what I concluded was that Russian Scientists in 1908 had created what was the first atomic bomb. What they failed to understand at the time was how much fission would result from their experiment...the resulting explosion was much larger than they could have possibly imagined and everyone involved in the experiment along with all evidence of the experiment were destroyed in the resulting atomic blast. recon_soldier Posted December 3, 2006 #14 Share Posted December 3, 2006 Oh, also forgot to mention - Other news sources i read said that they spotted a fire nearby to the 'estimated impact area' This article states none.. Ill try and track down some of the news articles and sources.

No one said anything about it being aliens, you just assumed and you know what they say about assuming anything....this would be a perfect example of why NOT to assume. edited: cause I r the typing clutz. Cebrakon Posted December 5, 2006 #20 Share Posted December 5, 2006 The Tunguska event has been well explained in scientific journals as a meteor of a certain size, traveling at a certain velocity from a certain direction. At a particular height, it exploded. It is not unusual for meteors to do this. Two facts on the ground provide all the data necessary. (1) No fragments of the meteor could be found in the crater, just as with Meteor Crater in Arizona. (2) The pattern of the fallen timbers could still be determined decades after the event. Those directly under the blast remained standing. The others fanned out in an asymmetrical pattern, showing the direction of travel. The size of the pattern determined the energy released. There is no mystery about Tunguska. ~~~Cebrakon
ShaunZero Posted December 5, 2006 #21 Share Posted December 5, 2006 I would say that saying it is an UFO that crashed is ridiculous enough for most people. Depends on what exactly they saw. If I saw it, and it did not appear to be anything "natural", then I'd sure as hell not be afraid to call it a UFO.
recon_soldier Posted December 5, 2006 #22 Share Posted December 5, 2006 it still amazes me as to how the term UFO has directly been associated with ET's. What are we going to call them if we ever do identify them? Still UFO's is my bet.
ShaunZero Posted December 6, 2006 #23 Share Posted December 6, 2006 Well, it all depends. It's a bit hard to change from calling it "UFO" and calling it "Alien Craft". The meaning I use it for is just an unknown craft that belongs to either "alien" beings or humans. If it belongs to humans, it is "secret craft" because of the way it can fly and it's characteristics. Sometimes I'll use UFO for the actual meaning. An unidentified flying object.
