Did Earth's moon form around Mercury ?

A controversial new theory has been proposed suggesting that our moon didn't form around the Earth but instead formed in orbit around Mercury and later migrated out until it was caught by Earth's gravity and roped in to orbit.
The moon may have been adopted by our planet instead of descended from it. If a new twist on a decades-old theory is right, conditions in the early solar system suggest the moon formed inside Mercury's orbit and migrated out until it was roped into orbit around Earth.

I not sure where I heard this, i always though that our moon originally belong to venus . and latter getting caught by earth gravity . if it really form around mercury , the chance endup eaten by sun is much higher

I think the Moon is from Cheese Universe!

I dunno, the current theory of another planet colliding with Earth in the Solar Systems early formation, creating a spray of debris around Earth. More plausible than the theory this OT states.

the problem i see is that the moon is moving away from the earth not closer.

I think the Moon is from Cheese Universe! Every one knows cheese is made in Wisconsin by Big Plump Swiss girls you silly man! If the Moon was formed near mercury the rotation would be much faster, and the spin would allow us to see both sides. The fact that only one side faces us is the clincher for the Earth Impact theory.Or so I reason.

I can't see this making sense. The moon's isotope ratios indicate a kinship with the Earth, as does its low iron content. The large impact hypothesis makes the most sense of anything I've seen in any of my astronomy courses. The problem with the idea that the moon was captured from elsewhere in the solar system is that the Moon would fall towards the Earth, gaining EXACTLY the velocity it would require to escape again in addition to whatever velocity it had initially. Something the size of the moon, weighing 7*10^22 kilograms, would need to lose several kilometers per second of velocity in one... [More]

Well, I imagine lots of posts like this one are hitting the forums; how can they not? With the sun's immediate and logarithmic response to the impact on the Moon, it validates the 'impactor theory' in a whole new way: Something (the fall-back when one does not understand) caused the planet in the Astroid Belt to 'jump' to a new E valley, and its motion was directed inward which makes Mars, Venus or Earth the E valleys targeted. Whichever takes your fancy: Mars with intelligent life redirecting it when it appeared to target Mars, and its redirection takes it to an impact with Earth. Love this a... [More]
