One-way Mars trip could initiate colonization

Physicists have contended that a manned one-way trip to Mars could be the way forward.
The greatest expense in a manned mission to Mars would be in returning the astronauts to the Earth, instead an alternative would be to have them stay there and lay the groundwork for the planet's colonization.
The vast plains of Mars may be the most promising place beyond Earth for human colonization, but is it enough for a one-way trip to the Red Planet? Two researchers seem to think so.

Sounds interesting but really who would commit to such a plan? I mean anyone can say they would do anything when filling out a survey. But when its time to actually do it things change. If these brilliant minds really want to lead by example they should volunteer themselves to man the first rocket. Who would know better what to do then the very ones that came up with the idea!

Invoking the spirit of "Star Trek" in a scholarly article entitled "To Boldly Go," two scientists contend human travel to Mars could happen much more quickly and cheaply if the missions are made one-way. They argue that it would be little different from early settlers to North America, who left Europe with little expectation of return. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=12148305
