The UM Gallery Has Been Retired [Dec 2025]
Way back in the early days of the site some 20+ years ago now, we launched the gallery ("Images") section.
At the time, it was a novel concept - there weren't many places on the Internet where it was possible to view a curated collection of images related to the unexplained.
Our original gallery used a platform called Coppermine and it proved to be quite a hit. Users could upload images and comment on them, again something that was not common at that time.
Over a couple of years the gallery really took off and attracted quite a lot of new visitors to the site.
We later opted to move from Coppermine to our own custom gallery solution which is what most users who visited it will remember.
Over time, however, as more alternative ways to share and view images online became the norm (such as Google Images and social media), our gallery became increasingly redundant.
By 2010, activity had dropped and there wasn't a lot of interest in using it to upload images.
Despite this, we decided to maintain the gallery for some time afterward and it had continued to be a feature of the site for many, many years.
By the end of 2025, though, as we approached 15 years since it was last properly active, we felt that it was time to let go.
Our thanks go out to everyone who uploaded, commented or otherwise participated in the gallery over the years, your contributions are much appreciated.
