Uploader comment: A picture taken in my back garden in November 2004; it appears to depict some sort of winged form flying upwards. The reality is different, this cropped part of a bigger image is nothing more than a falling snowflake caught in the camera flash; the trail is caused by the flake continuing to fall while the light from the flash fades - the flash and camera shutter are not synchronized.

Accident or coincidence of the angle of the (hexagonal but flat) snowflake when frozen in motion by the camera flash.

It is worth taking into consideration whether there is a reflective object on the fence causing flare. As long as this remains a possibilty, we will never really know. Stray light can cause all kinds of flares, especially a can or flat reflective object rgar has caught the light. Digital cameras tend to intensify reflection greater than the film variety. GeorgeK
