The fossil remains of a new long-necked sauropod dinosaur have been discovered in a quarry in Utah.
Named Brontomerus mcintoshi or "thunder-thighs" the new dinosaur was named after its hugely powerful thigh muscles that are thought to have been used to kick away predators or to help traverse rough terrain. The fossil remains were found alongside an infant of the same species.
Brontomerus lived about 110 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous Period, and probably had to contend with fierce "raptors" such as Deinonychus and Utahraptor. The new species is described in a paper recently published in the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica by an international team of scientists from Britain and the US.
