New "thunder-thighs" dinosaur discovered

The fossil remains of a new long-necked sauropod dinosaur have been discovered in a quarry in Utah.
Named Brontomerus mcintoshi or "thunder-thighs" the new dinosaur was named after its hugely powerful thigh muscles that are thought to have been used to kick away predators or to help traverse rough terrain. The fossil remains were found alongside an infant of the same species.
Brontomerus lived about 110 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous Period, and probably had to contend with fierce "raptors" such as Deinonychus and Utahraptor. The new species is described in a paper recently published in the journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica by an international team of scientists from Britain and the US.

Love how they still are discovering new dinosaurs. Thanks for this. Oh, we will be doing that for quite some time. I do find the article amusing though. "A member of the long-necked sauropod group of dinosaurs which includes Diplodocus and Brachiosaurus, Brontomerus may have used its powerful thighs as a weapon to kick predators, or to help travel over rough, hilly terrain, experts believe." So it used its thighs as...legs, basically.

The National Geographic channel is showcasing documentaries of all sorts concerning dinosaurs this week. It's Dino Week I watched a few last night and it was showing all the strange evolutions from different species. Spinosaur FTW!

Read something a while back that said that some scientists think that up to a third of all known dinosaurs never actually existed at all and that they are younger/older versions of animals previously found. It said that a lot of young animals looked nothing like the adult versions.
