Ah, is it me or is there a ship in the distance. And if there is, doesn't it look awfully close to that water spout???

I saw three once when I was out on a longliner ship. it was awesome and scary at the same time!!! two were small ad didnt last long and the other was kind of like this one. it sounds like a woosh noise hard to explain... like a mix of pouring water and a vacume sucking water at the same time.

I saw a dozen of them all at once while I was on a Navy ship in the eastern Mediterranean. The ship was part of a squadron sailing from Turkey to Port Said, Egypt. A ship would go right through one of the water spouts, which would pop back up into the clouds, then come right back down as soon as the ship had passed. The things were coming down all around us, kicking up water like the one in the photograph, but they were all much shorter and thicker than the one shown in this picture.
