Long Island Railroad figure
Image credit: LeRoy J. Tillman Jr.

Uploader comment: This photograph was taken on the Long Island Railroad revealed a form that was not seen at the time of the photograph, but was seen while reviewing the batch photos. I asked my friend at the time of the photo what was wrong, she replied that she felt really bad just at the moment of the photo, but felt immediately better afterwards. Please comment... This is real!

Very cool. Looks like you were in a car...? possible someone was really there when you went by?

No, we were not in an automobile, we were in a railroad car (look at the inner space of the train car, the window, the height of the form outside, etc...). The windows in the background are in focus, my friend is in focus, but the form is not. It also appears that you can see the sky though spaces on its body. No camera or other tricks at all, this a true photo! Have you seen anyone that looks like the form in the photo? I have not.

The "form" is not in focus because he was beyond the locked focus range of the camera, and because you were in a moving train. This is a very common, well-known and even popular photographic effect. It's a great photo though.

The background (windows)and foreground (my friend and train interior)are in focus, but the form in-between is not in focus? What is this very common, well-known and even popular photographic effect called, I am not familiar with it.

Just to let everyone know, the camera was normally set to photograph object in motion, as we were taking action photos outside, earlier that afternoon. I really want to know what the form was in the photo. I took the photo and still am stumped. I usually have the explanations for things, but for this thing, I have nothing!

It's called depth of field. Like I said, the form is obviously a person outside the window, beyond the focus range of the camera. That's why he's not in focus. And no camera or setting would bring him into clear focus when the camera is moving and the figure is not. I purposely create this effect in many of my photos.

It could just as well be a reflection of someone standing behind you.
