'Umbrella Drone' can keep the rain off you

A firm in England is selling a bizarre drone with an umbrella that will attempt to keep you dry outside.
The unorthodox (though ingenious) contraption, which is known as the Umbrella Drone, is linked by GPS to the mobile phone of its owner and is able to navigate completely autonomously.

Despite possessing only thirty minutes of battery life, the drone will follow you around when it rains while making every effort to ensure that its umbrella stops the downpour from spoiling your day.
"[For] those who don't want to juggle managing an umbrella while carrying out their everyday tasks, then the innovative Umbrella Drone is a gadget not to be without," said Tim Morley of Drones Direct.

There is one small snag however - the device is priced at a whopping £1,299.

It's not the first time the company has offered a super-expensive drone for sale either. Its gold plated DJI Phantom 4 Camera Drone for instance is currently selling for the princely sum of £19,999.97.

Good grief

Gene Kelly would have had a ball with one of these. Singing in the Rain could have looked so much different.

Good idea, but the realisation may turn out to be quite ridiculous. It uses GPS? Really? So it will keep the umbrella +/- 3 meters from me? Does the drone consider wind direction? Wind gusts? Is the umbrella attached to the bottom side of the drone? Does it keep it low enough to keep you dry and high enough to let you see where you're going? It's not an easy task to make a high-quality device for such a seemingly simple job.

Hmm. Maybe if they attach a rod to it that you could hold in your hand to adjust the back-forth and up-down direction for close proximity. I bet they've not thought of that one. I might contact them.

There is the small matter of wind also. One good gust and your $1200 might go flopping end-over-end down the street!

Wow, talk about silly applications of technology. Drone umbrella? Silly. What's next, a drone mousetrap? You know, the drone hunts for mice, picks one up, and drops it into your neighbors chimney.

How about a drone caddy to carry your golf clubs.  You can still use a golf cart to "walk" the course but you wouldn't have to carry your clubs to the ball.
