30-year-old mystery of two missing climbers has finally been solved

Image: AI-generated (Midjourney) It had seemed like the beginning of an exciting adventure, but for the two men - who were 39 and 41 at the time - it was a trek from which they would never return, their young lives cut short by tragedy.

When they failed to return from the mountains, local authorities feared the worst.

With no remains having been found, however, the ultimate fate of the two men remained elusive.

Now, though, more than 30 years after their disappearance, a receding glacier has revealed two bodies that have since been identified as those of the two missing climbers.The remains had been found quite by accident when another hiker stumbled upon them at the site of the Trift glacier to the south of the city of Lucerne.

When authorities recovered the bodies, they were able to determine via DNA test that these were indeed the remains of the two missing climbers from 1992.

They would have likely remained undiscovered if it weren't for the receding glacier.

These aren't the only missing climbers and hikers to have been found in the Alps in recent years as a result of climate change - even the wreckage of a plane that crashed on the Aletsch Glacier in 1968 has been recovered due to the melting ice.

Sadly, there are also likely to be the remains of other missing climbers still hidden in the mountains, preserved beneath the ice and snow, just waiting to be found.
