The audacious move would seek to learn how the environment of space might help to age and taste samples of the drink.
Creating the perfect Scotch whisky is no easy feat - its taste comes down to numerous factors ranging from its precise ingredients to the environment in which it matures.
Now, in a bid to investigate new ways to create the ideal tipple, engineers from Scotland and Japan are planning to send some of the drink on a rocket into the final frontier.
Set to launch in 2028, the experiment will send various samples of whisky into space to find out if the frequent changes in temperature experienced in orbit will help the drink mature faster.
"We want to see what the effect of a space environment is on the aging of the whisky," said Dr Gilles Bailet from the University of Glasgow.
"We've got the best people here in Scotland to be able to inform that, with centuries of experience, so we can bring this whisky experience into space."
The mission will use a 'cubesat' - a tiny satellite that will be deployed from the ISS.
In the future, it is possible that particularly wealthy individuals will drop huge amounts of cash to acquire bottles of 'space-aged' whisky that has matured in orbit around the Earth.
Exactly what it will taste like, however, remains to be seen.
