The team had set out to investigate the 'Taraia Object', which was thought to be the remains of the famed aviator's plane.
There was much excitement in the air this week as efforts to scour the remote Pacific island of Nikumaroro began in earnest following months of delays and setbacks.
The primary focus of the expedition was the 'Taraia Object' - a mysterious anomaly spotted beneath the surface of a lagoon on the island via satellite imagery.
An analysis of the image had suggested that it resembled the remains of a plane - possibly the very one that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan had vanished in back in 1937.
Now, at last, this tantalizing anomaly has been definitively identified.
Sadly, though, far from being Amelia Earhart's plane, the peculiar object has turned out to be little more than a collection of large trees that happened to look strange in the satellite image.
It's a bitter blow for those hoping for an answer to the mystery of the aviator's disappearance.
"Amelia Earhart's spirit of courage and curiosity drove every step of the search," said Rick Pettigrew of the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI).
"We accomplished our goal to determine what the Taraia Object was, and we're deeply grateful to the private donors who shared our vision and made this journey possible."
"Our team remains in great spirits and proud of what was accomplished."
