Report outlines possible alien threat

A report for NASA has detailed possible scenarios in which Earth could be threatened by hostile aliens.
One such scenario involves extraterrestrials destroying the planet because the increase in global warming indicates a civilization that is out of control. Although extremely unlikely, the researchers emphasised that if official alien contact were to ever be made that this possibility represents a threat that shouldn't be ignored.
Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

Yeah they are loons that believe in science nothing like rednecks that head down to the local McDonald to get the opinion of Bubba on the matter. That's a very blurry area of science to take seriously. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/christopherbooker/3982101/2008-was-the-year-man-made-global-warming-was-disproved.html http://www.technologyreview.com/Energy/13830/

The aliens would probably decide. If a species was advanced enough to come here, I'd imagine understanding our biochemistry, querying and then auditing specific memories wouldn't be too hard. After data compilation is done, probability routines could be run to see which people were most likely to commit further acts ecological harm, or harm towards their fellow man in a variety of ways. After that, seperate the two groups and do what needs to be done I guess. Celestial Thought Police, then? Celestial Thought Police, then? "These people will be Harmful to the Planet at some point in the future, so we will have to Take them Out now, for the sake of the Universe." I think this is one of those situations where the dividing line between Exraterrestrials and what people used to (and some still do) call God gets blurred. That's exactly right! The religious overtones seem to reverberate through history. For example Montezuma II invited the "Alien" Cortes and his men into the Aztec Capital because he believed him to be Quetzalcoatl returning.

Oh, oh! Has anyone made a Star Trek joke yet? Surely, the Vulcan's only arrive after the first successful FTL attempt? Up 'til then, we're not going to even make it out of our own solar system. Ah, d@mn... lol I was gonna tell everybody not to worry because we have at least fifty years before Zephram Cochrane initiates first contact. (Bad joke is bad, I'm aware) Seriously, though... I think all the alien hype as of late has something to do with the whole 2012 BS. Everybody has a theory. We need to learn to handle each other before we try and handle some aliens. If there are aliens watching us,... [More]

For the sake of argument, lets hope it never comes to that, but I could see it being very possible if a situation like that ever came about.

Agreed. Shocking as it is in the Guardian. A supposedly serious news outlet. I think the important thing here is not the story content but the fact that this story is like so many others of similar content in the media (reference to aliens and UFOs) recently being pushed into the public arena again. Yes, and furthermore, any beings capable of manipulating space-time and/or matter to facilitate travelling such distances would surely know how to fix minor stuff like climate change and make re-education attractive instead of it being a cynical stealth-tax opportunity at every turn.

I'm fairly certain the aliens would be delighted to have found another intelligent lifeform. I would assume that, if the aliens have developed the technology necessary for space travel, they would find humanity as a rarity, and would probably want to assist us in our attempts to find a cost effective environmentally friendly energy source. I don't see a highly advanced race of beings travaling the cosmos because they're blood thirsty. Thats just a concept created by humans eager to sell a story.
