Mystery of the ‘land of twins’

The hunt goes on in a small town in Brazil to uncover the reason behind the unusual concentration of twins born in the area. At present there has been no explanation for why there are 38 pairs of twins out of 80 families living in an area of just over one square mile in size. Recently a controversial theory was suggested involving experiments conducted by nazi scientist Josef Mengele however this has never been proven.
High atop a hill behind his family’s home, Derli Grimm knelt and took a sip from a thin black tube leading from a natural spring. Like so many in this farming town, populated almost entirely by German-speaking immigrants, Mr. Grimm, 19, believes that something in the water — a mysterious mineral, perhaps — is responsible for the town’s unusual concentration of twins. “It can’t all be explained by genetics,” said Mr. Grimm, himself a twin."

I think I'll buy the theory of the Nazi experiment. A mineral from some water can't possibly contribute into some fertilization of twins. If it can, then at least some animals in that area should give birth to twins too.

Aren't concentration of twins in polluted countries higher? The article itself already talks about inbreeding and isolating population which probably is the final answer for this issue. Would be freaky to have all the children around you be twins. Village of the Damned scenario.

I hope that's not the case. Josef Mengele's experiements were gruesome rather than being of any scientific merit. Those poor souls never had redemption either. He's one of many Nazi war criminals who evaded justice.

All I was thinking while reading this is how ridiculously annoying investigation of crimes would be in this town..

All I was thinking while reading this is how ridiculously annoying investigation of crimes would be in this town.. Haha, I know eh? Well, for identical twins, I think fingerprints and teeth marks are unique for most cases. DNA is supposedly the same. So, there's still a way to differentiate.
