Ants don't have traffic jams

Unlike traffic on our roads, large numbers of ants have the remarkable ability to maintain an average velocity regardless of how many there are. The research was carried out by setting up cameras to observe a number of active ant trails.
As highway traffic increases, you'd probably expect a traffic jam, where vehicles slow down due to the high density. While traffic jams are a common occurrence on our highways, high density traffic has completely different effects for ants traveling on trails. As a new study has found, ants don't have traffic jams. Rather, as ant traffic density increases, the traffic maintains the same average velocity as at low densities. "

Of course not,They dont drive big cars and suv's,they simply walk around, over or under the others ,that sent trail they leave behind lets them move in one diretion or the other eaisly and they are almost brain washed in doing so.

Part of their behaviour I think also can be explained that it is almost like the ants work together as one organism. Different ants have different roles and work together sufficiently well. Insects have some unique quantities not found in other animals, as far as I know.

If they can do it, why can't we???

Ashiene, I still don't get it. You do understand that by letting these ants roam freely you may be responsible for infestation of the other units? For all you know other people are trying to get rid of the ants but because you do nothing their infestation problem will continue no matter what they do. No offense, but I don't think you are considering the impact you may be having on neighbors. Unless of course you own the building and are the only one living there. Tell me, would you also allow cockroaches to roam freely in your home? I guess it's NOMB. Get rid of the ants? Don't they deserve to... [More]

Get rid of the ants? Don't they deserve to live their lives naturally as they should? Why should I slaughter 3 whole colonies of ants just because of a possibility that they may infest other units? And so what if they do infest other units? Do governments round up homeless people living on the streets, take them to a facility and execute them? No, not anymore. Governments try to provide housing and jobs for the homeless people, like I am providing a safe haven and food for the ants that take refuge (yes refuge from evil people like you that only think of themselves) in my home. What a load of ... [More]

This is very misleading, and simply inaccurate comparison. Whilst ants are brilliant at what they do, the point of this article should never have been about traffic jams. It's comparing ants using their own bodies, to us using cars. Cars are something we operate, they are not ourselves. We do not get into 'traffic jams' when we walk around in crowds. Most of the time we maintain an average velocity, too. That would have been the appropriate comparison...comparing ants walking around to us walking around. But no, whichever idiot wrote this article through it appropriate to compare ants walking ... [More]
